I recently participated in my first CHOC Walk in the Park to support Children’s Hospital of Orange County, which was an early morning 5k stroll through Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park. The event had a 6 AM start time to allow participants to finish their walk before the parks opened, and we crossed the finish line and left DCA at around 8 AM. We had already snagged 8:30 AM reservations for breakfast at Storyteller’s Cafe, so we made our way over and checked in.

Upon arriving, the host asked if we were celebrating anything, and we let her know we had two July birthdays in our party. I also mentioned that I am vegan, which she made a note of. We had a little time before our table would be ready, so we wandered down the hall to check out the gift shop at Tenaya Stone Spa – I brought home a bar of eucalyptus soap, and my friends picked up a few things.
We got a text that our table was ready, and returned to Storytellers. My friend and I got birthday buttons, and were taken to our table. Beverage orders arrived, and I double checked that the server knew I am vegan – it didn’t seem like she did, but she sent the chef out a few minutes later for a consultation. He gave me a rundown of everything on the buffet that would be vegan-friendly, which included fruit, hash browns, and the omelette bar. (More on that in a moment.) He also mentioned that there are many pastries on the buffet that are vegetarian, but not vegan as they contain butter or dairy. He also offered to show me where everything is on the buffet, which I declined, but I could see that being helpful at some of the larger Disney buffets with more vegan options.
Then he gave me a rundown of what he could make for me in the kitchen, which included a fruit and coconut yogurt parfait, and allergy-friendly Mickey waffles (which are vegan and gluten-free). I ended up asking for the parfait and two waffles (note: should have ordered three). By the time I got back to the table with my buffet items, my kitchen order had arrived – and my friend had already left a Cast Compliment for our chef via the Disneyland app.

At the buffet, I grabbed a few scoops of the hash browns with cajun seasoning, which were delicious (and a little spicy). Then I made my way to the omelette station because Storytellers can now make vegan omelettes with dairy-free cheese and JUST Egg. Vegan omelettes! At Disneyland! There aren’t a lot of things I really miss from my pre-vegan days, but this was the first omelette I’ve had that really tasted like what I remembered from childhood. I also loved walking up to the omelette station and placing my order like a total normie. They also had soy chorizo available, but I went with straight veggies and cheese, which was perfect. I probably could have eaten two, but I guess I’ll just have to come back another time!

The waffles came with maple syrup, which I lightly drizzled on the parfait to add a little sweetness. All of the fruit I had was sweet and fresh, and I thought about grabbing seconds on that too! The flavor of the waffles was nice, but the texture started falling apart when I cut into it. I wondered if this could be an issue with the gluten-free batter, and might ask for them “well done” next time to see if it helps.
Overall, this was a great meal, and a nice addition to our CHOC Walk experience. If you visit Storytellers, be sure to let me know what vegan options you find!
